Infinite Convergence Session at Mobile Expo Asia: The Rise of Rich Communication Suite and the Future of Wireless Messaging 

Infinite Convergence presented the impact of RCS on driving new developments in messaging to a packed audience at the Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai.

CHICAGO, Ill. – Infinite Convergence Solutions, a carrier-grade next-generation wireless messaging technology provider, presented on the “Future of Messaging” to a full-house at the Innovation Stage at the Mobile Asia Expo held in Shanghai from June 20-June 22, 2012. Experts from Infinite Convergence discussed how the new Rich Communication Suite (RCS) messaging technology will be critical for wireless carriers to counter messaging-based revenue losses caused by Over-the-Top (OTT) applications.

While SMS and MMS services are expected to maintain universal appeal among end-users, OTT applications are becoming more popular, largely because of their user-friendly messaging capabilities. However, these applications pose a risk to Mobile Network Operator (MNO) revenue growth.

“Common industry misconceptions hold carrier revenue growth from messaging is doomed because of the widespread adoption of OTT applications,” said John Puma, Vice President of Product Management and System Engineering of Infinite Convergence. “On the contrary – Portio Research predicts wireless carrier revenue derived from messaging will reach $310.2 billion by 2016, up from $202 billion in 2011. We believe this growth will result from a mix of enterprise adoption of application-to-person (A2P) and machine-to-machine (M2M) technology, along with a rise in popularity of person-to-person (P2P) messaging technology among end-users.”

As OTT messaging application adoption increases, wireless carriers must provide feature-rich messaging SMS and MMS experiences on par or better than OTT applications to stay relevant in the eyes of consumers. RCS technology enables wireless providers to provide a better messaging experience to attract users and increase messaging revenue.

The impact of RCS has not gone unnoticed in the industry. In fact, data from Infonetics and GSMA predict there will be 73.6 million RCS subscribers worldwide by 2016. At Mobile Asia Expo, Infinite Convergence explained the importance of these findings in the marketplace while sharing specific features that draw in users to RCS messaging technology. The company also presented the key criteria for wireless carriers to consider when selecting a vendor that can accelerate RCS deployment and minimize both risks and investments.

Infinite Convergence also presented its own RCS tool during the Expo, known as RCS 5.0, which offers the wireless market additional RCS capabilities. Additionally, through Infinite Convergence’s RCS Hub solution, interoperability of RCS services with different carriers is now possible.
